FantasyCon 2009
18th - 20th September
Britannia Hotel, Nottingham

Gabriel Strange has made a
film of the short story that
eventually grew into my novel
Digging up Donald.

I'm happy to say it will be
screened as part of the British
Fantasy Society FantasyCon
this year in Nottingham.

The film is entitled
Mr Abershaw's Happening Day
and will be shown as part of the
ShortFilm Showcase.

Hopefully, when Gabriel has
finished using it, I can persuade
him to let me post it to YouTube.

Ellen Datlow and Nick Mamatas
have now released the table of
contents details for the upcoming
Haunted Legends
anthology to be published
by Tor in 2010.

It seems I've joined a rather tasty list of
authors involved in the project.

My story, The Spring Heel, is
based (surprisingly :-) on the Spring
Heeled Jack legend - the long-legged,
rather spindley character who was
reportedly seen regularly on dark nights
leaping about the streets of Liverpool
(amongst other places).

Table of Contents:

Knickerbocker Holiday Richard Bowes

That Girl Kaaron Warren

Akbar Kit Reed

The Spring Heel Steven Pirie

As Red as Red Caitlín R. Kiernan

Tin Cans Ekaterina Sedia

Shoebox Train Wreck John Mantooth

15 Panels Depicting the Sadness of the Baku & the Jotai Catherynne M. Valente

La Llorona Carolyn Turgeon

Face Like a Monkey Carrie Laben

"Steven Pirie writes an amusing tale of a middle-aged crisis and a high-tech, very expensive weekend away. The interaction between the characters develops almost unnoticed until you're suddenly aware of both points of view. Very cleverly written."

2008: A Good Start!

My short story Night Dreaming has won first prize in the Future Fire/Second Life Black Swan short story competition.

The story wins a rather tasty 500 US Dollars, along with publication in both Future Fire and Second Life.

The competition was to visit Second Life , and in particular Black Swan's enclave, and view the stunning, 3-D, animated artwork. The challenge then was to produce a story inspired by what's there. Night Dreaming is a story based on isolation. Believe me, Black Swan have produced a world of splendid isolation.

Go see for yourself--you will need a free Second Life account, and you will need to download Second Life software to drive the world--but the visit is well worth your trouble.

Find the angel, and step into the beam of light to its rear. You will be transported into an upper realm filled with lots of additional imagery.

Black Swan have created a truly remarkable world of art.

Nemonymous 7 Zencore
has accepted a so far
"unnamed story" of mine.

For those who don't know
Nemonymous's mode of operation,
it's unnamed because Nemo is all
about anonymity (in fact, for past
issues its authors would not even
be allowed to make this "unnamed
story" declaration).

I love the idea, because stories
are accepted by story rather than
by who's writing them (submissions
are also made anonymously). It's an
even playing field.

Des Lewis, Nemo's creator,
is running a competition here
where the prize is a free copy
of the anthology.

Nemo is well worth winning -
I have all the previous editions
and the quality is superb.
