An Occasional Card

An Occasional Card

Harriet hid the note, again. She sneaked it behind one of the big Happy Christmas, Darling, I love you jobs when Mr.Gilbert wasn't looking. She stood, wilting under the accusing stares of the cuddly frogs on the top shelf. The wayward nerve in her eyelid stirred, and her fingers twitched at her thigh where the hem of her skirt rode high. She peered outward through the shop window; sparrow-nervous as if early morning shoppers might have seen her place the note.

And God Saw

And God Saw

And God saw that it was…

'Bugger,' said God.

He'd nearly done it, this time; nearly kept his new Earth and its moon apart long enough for Adam to appear. This time, he'd even got as far as evolving birds before his left arm had tired and the two worlds he'd orchestrated were sent crashing together.

The Soup in Uncle
Norman's Beard

The Soup in Uncle Norman's Beard

** Nominated for the Pushcart Prize **

** Voted amongst the most **
notable stories of 2005 in the
Story South Million Writers Award

Things collected in Uncle Norman's beard. It was why Aunt Hilda refused to dine with him any more. His beard was a haven for the lost and wayward - discarded peas and unwanted carrots, fallen beans and errant breadcrumbs. Not that Uncle Norman cared, of course. His beard was big and bushy and grey about the edges, but he wore it with pride whenever he strutted about the high street.

Titan's Teashop

Titan's Teashop

And she knows, Edna, were she to be truly honest with herself, that to open a teashop on Titan is not really a viable proposition of the day and age. But it does keep Doris thinking.

'It's a long way away,' says her friend Doris, her brow furrowed and ridged; the cup of blue pills part raised to her lips. 'It's much further than the One for the Pot tearooms on Dorchester Street, and the Have Your Cake and Eat It emporium on Dolby Grove. Dr Chalami says Titan is half way across the solar system. He says it would take years just to get there, never mind us opening up a teashop when we did.'

A Small Box of Rat Poison

A Small Box of Rat Poison

In the grocer's shop, nestled on the quiet corner of the King's Road, Norman stood alone in shadow, fondling his sprouts.

He liked to rotate his sprouts on a regular basis. He said it stopped the top ones fading unduly on the display. Oxidation was a green vegetable's worst enemy, and almost as bad as a fungal blight. It comforted him to be elbow deep in the green bullets. It stopped him worrying about the wife's death; eased his concerns over what the bin men would say if they looked in the Safeway carrier bags and noticed the wife all chopped up in them.
